Do you like Mark Twain's stories of pranks? The gang at Ziggy's just dreamed up a really, really, good one.
It's Tommy and Dana's first job out of high school, working in an amusement park parking lot. The heat, the rain, the customers, the bumper stickers … it's enough to drive you to drink.
So the gang gathers at Ziggy's bar at night, where true and false stories float around the table and airplanes pass close overhead. Inspiration strikes one night and they come up with a prank to pull on someone. A great prank. A story that'll live forever. And all the regulars will be right there to make it happen.
Everything's set up. Everybody's set up. Psyched up. Hyped up. Everything's going smoothly, exactly as planned.
But they hadn't planned on this.
And then … you'll have to get the book to find out.
I've noticed that sometimes a group of people can get the same idea at the same time. It can be a sudden breakthrough or a slow realization. As we sit there, I start getting an idea. I look around and everybody's quiet, looking like they're thinking, too. We start looking at each other, apparently with the same thought slowly blossoming in our minds.
Tommy says, dreamily, “What would he do if he had to go through the haunted house.”
Fowler smiles and says, “What would he do if he had to go through the haunted house and there was a ghost there. As a matter of fact, what would he do if he had to go through the haunted house and there were five ghosts there,” says Fowler, smiling.
“All five of us?” I say.
Tommy says, “Why not all five of us? There's plenty of space. It'd be interesting to find out.”.
READ MORE“Prob'ly jump out of his skin,” says Rory. We all start smiling and looking at each other. We pull our chairs closer together.
Fowler whispers, although nobody's listening but us, “We could sneak in there and force Leon to go through. If he's scared, he'll totally freak out if a group of us surround him and goes 'Boo!'”
“Five people jumping out at him would scare him even if he isn't already scared of it,” says Rory.
“How could it be done?” asks Loose Jimmy, idly.

Security to the Haunted House is all about a summer job in an amusement park that takes on a life of its own. Huse writes with an uncanny mix of of humor and profundity that had me laughing with tears
in my eyes at times, and fearing for the guys' lives at other times.
Huse's story endings are brilliant and getting there is a ton of fun.
Read it!

Well that was a fun but slightly disturbing read. Most of the book is a "my first job sucked" story that I'm sure everyone has lived in one form or another. I found myself reminiscing about my first job and the people I worked with. But then the story took a left turn to creepyville and all comparisons with my first job faded away.
I'm trying to avoid any spoilers here: suffice to say I'd like to hear more tales from that security crew. I think there's more weirdness lurking in that amusement park.

Security to the Haunted House is another great romp by Huse. It's a rich story of human foibles with a shocking twist. I love the way he takes me far away but to some place I feel at home, because his characters are authentic. A great short read.

Good stuff! Post high school sense of adventure flies in the face of “how the heck did I get HERE?” Great characters that we’ve all encountered in some form or another. It ended with me wanting to know
more about these folks...
Fun read

This one had me chuckling. I can just see Rory having a “maggot“ in her wrist lock. And talk about sweating bullets in the haunted house.
